India's Diplomatic Corps Assigns Jina Uika to Botswana Mission

New Delhi, 8 September – In a fresh diplomatic move, the Ministry of External Affairs has named Jina Uika, an IFS officer from the 2006 batch, as the upcoming High Commissioner to the Republic of Botswana. The seasoned official is currently serving as Joint Secretary in the MEA and will transition to the Gaborone posting in the near future.

Uika’s prior experience includes serving as Deputy Head of Mission at the Indian Embassy in Moscow, where she contributed significantly to strengthening India‑Russia bilateral relations, trade missions, and defence talks. Within the Ministry, she has been a key participant in formulating migration and skill‑development policies and in the execution of related international conferences.

The diplomatic relationship between India and Botswana was forged immediately after Botswana’s independence in 1966. The two countries have maintained a friendly and cooperative stance, with India establishing its High Commission in Gaborone in 1987 and Botswana opening its embassy in New Delhi in 2006.

Trade historically revolves around diamonds and gemstones, with Indian enterprises dominating the cutting and polishing segment. Recent years have witnessed diversification into pharmaceuticals, agro‑processing, digital education, and mining collaborations.

A landmark in wildlife cooperation was achieved when Botswana transferred nine cheetahs – six females and three males – to India’s Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh, reinforcing India’s cheetah re‑introduction project.
