India Emerges as Key Driver of World Economic Recovery

Sept 16, Washington — IMF Deputy Managing Director Najel Clark, after completing a five‑day visit to India, declared that the country is ready to lead the next big wave of global economic expansion. Clark pointed to India’s sturdy economic base, the swift momentum of its private sector and burgeoning tech capabilities as the three pillars of this outlook.

During his stay, Clark held talks in New Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai with Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das and NITI Aayog Vice‑Chairman Ashok Kumar Lahiri, among other senior officials.

In a formal statement, Clark said, “India holds the capacity to accelerate the forthcoming surge in worldwide growth, and the IMF will remain a close partner on that path.”

He described India as the fastest‑growing major economy, now a pivotal engine for global development due to its solid fiscal discipline and policy framework.

Key discussion points included safeguarding macro‑economic stability amid rising global uncertainties, containing inflation, and advancing reforms that raise productivity, improve competitiveness and keep growth rates high in the medium term.

Clark also remarked on the enthusiasm of Indian entrepreneurs, praising the private sector’s vigor, the nation’s talent pool and the accelerating adoption of digital, innovation and advanced manufacturing technologies that can lift productivity and add value across the economy.
