India-Iran Historical Ties Highlighted as Pejshaqian Joins BRICS Leaders

Iranian President Masoud Pejshaqian arrived in New Delhi on September 11 to participate in the 18th BRICS Summit, scheduled for 12‑13 September 2026. Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Shantanu Thakur welcomed the delegation at the airport, offering a warm reception.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs posted on X, underscoring the civilizational bond between India and Iran and their joint commitment to shared progress as BRICS members.

The summit will gather heads of the ten BRICS countries—Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates—together with partner nations such as Belarus, Cuba, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda, Uzbekistan and Vietnam.

Ismail Bakaei, spokesperson for Iran’s Foreign Ministry, confirmed the visit earlier in the week, noting the “historic and civilizational relationship” that underlies cooperation. He said Tehran would use the summit to discuss mutual interests, particularly trade, economic collaboration and the strategic Chabahar port.

The semi‑official Mehr News Agency reported that India’s participation in both the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation and BRICS strengthens bilateral ties, especially in trade and economic sectors. Regular dialogues between the two capitals often address issues like the Chabahar seaport, deemed vital for regional connectivity.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, via a post on X, expressed confidence that the summit would bring together global leaders for positive and substantive discussions aimed at the world’s welfare. He recalled a recent meeting with President Pejshaqian in Bishkek during the SCO summit, where both leaders reiterated their dedication to expanding cooperation across a range of fields.

During their talks, the leaders also reviewed recent events in West Asia and reaffirmed that all disagreements should be resolved through diplomatic engagement and dialogue.
