India Presents Five Principles for Global Stability to US Top Diplomat

In a detailed readout following talks with visiting US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar laid out India’s five guiding principles on Sunday. The agenda places dialogue and diplomacy at the centre of conflict resolution, calls for safe and open sea lanes, demands strict compliance with international law, opposes the weaponisation of trade and resources, and advocates trusted partnerships backed by robust supply chains. Jaishankar noted that the two countries have sustained momentum through frequent high-level exchanges since Rubio assumed office. The strategic convergence between New Delhi and Washington spans political, defence, economic, and technological domains, he said. Regional flashpoints in West Asia, Ukraine, and the Indo-Pacific were examined in depth, alongside the upcoming Quad foreign ministers’ meeting. Defence cooperation received fresh impetus through the recently renewed framework agreement and a new roadmap on underwater domain awareness. Trade officials are working to conclude an interim pact that sets the stage for comprehensive economic ties. Energy diversification, civil nuclear opportunities under the new peace legislation, critical minerals, and AI collaboration were also discussed. On security, Jaishankar underlined India’s uncompromising stance against terrorism and expressed satisfaction over joint efforts that led to the extradition of a key 26/11 conspirator. Counter-narcotics cooperation remains another shared priority. By articulating these five points, India signals its determination to shape an international environment where economic interdependence is shielded from geopolitical shocks.
