As conflict escalates between the United States, Israel, and Iran, BRICS foreign ministers convened in New Delhi to address the fallout across West Asia. The meeting revealed sharp divergences, particularly between Iran and the UAE, underscoring the difficulty of forging unified positions within the bloc during periods of heightened regional stress. Writing for Seviers, former diplomat Anil Trigunayat argued that the absence of agreement foreshadows greater challenges for BRICS unless tensions are contained swiftly. He pointed out that India’s consistent advocacy for dialogue, diplomacy, and de-escalation has guided its engagement with regional stakeholders. Prime Minister Modi and Foreign Minister Jaishankar have conducted wide-ranging discussions with world leaders to ease pressures and protect the welfare of India’s large diaspora in the Gulf. Trigunayat noted that India’s chairmanship has sought to steer BRICS toward resilience and sustainable cooperation through its chosen theme. Despite the group’s primary economic focus, geopolitical rivalries are testing its ability to remain non-confrontational. India maintains that its non-Western orientation does not imply opposition to the West, even as several major powers drift away from established international norms. With India set to host the BRICS summit in September, the prospects for a consensus document remain uncertain amid the ongoing conflict. Yet Trigunayat stressed that BRICS continues to advance practical initiatives in security, prosperity, and inclusive development for Global South countries. These efforts, he said, reinforce the group’s commitment to equality, justice, and balanced growth through consensus and mutual respect.
