India‑Sri Lanka Strategic Partnership Highlighted During Rajnath Singh's Trip

On September 8, New Delhi confirmed that Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will travel to Sri Lanka for a three‑day official mission starting Tuesday. The high‑level delegation, featuring senior representatives from the Defence and External Affairs ministries, will hold talks with Sri Lankan leaders and interact with the Indian community in Colombo.

The agenda includes reinforcing the traditionally strong and friendly bilateral relationship, with a particular emphasis on maritime security and defence collaboration.

Singh emphasized that the deep cultural bonds between the two nations underpin a multi‑layered partnership covering regional security, defence, trade and people‑to‑people exchanges. He highlighted India's prompt aid during the 2025 Cyclone Detwah and earlier economic support, illustrating the “neighbour first” approach championed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Mahasagar vision.

India’s $450 million reconstruction package seeks to restore critical infrastructure—roads, railways, bridges—as well as to rebuild homes and improve health, education, agriculture and disaster‑preparedness sectors.

Earlier in August, Sri Lankan Navy Vice‑Admiral Demian Fernando visited New Delhi, meeting Chief of Defence Staff General N.S. Raja Subramani and Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh. The dialogue reviewed existing defence cooperation, explored new joint training opportunities, and reaffirmed both countries’ commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the Indian Ocean, consistent with the Mahasagar framework.
