A suspected Iranian plot to assassinate Israel’s ambassador to Mexico, Einat Kranz Neiger, has been successfully thwarted, according to intelligence reports from US and Israeli officials. The operation, reportedly orchestrated by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Quds Force, was uncovered and neutralized earlier this year. Intelligence sources suggest the assassination plan was coordinated from within Iran’s embassy in Venezuela by an officer identified as Hasan Izadi, also known as Masood Rahnema. This foiled attempt underscores concerns about Iran’s alleged involvement in international covert operations targeting diplomats and dissidents. Israel’s Foreign Ministry lauded Mexican authorities for their crucial role in preventing the attack, emphasizing continued global cooperation against Iranian threats. The US State Department also condemned Iran’s alleged plots and pledged continued collaboration with allies. Mexico’s government, however, stated it had no official report of such an attempted attack but affirmed its commitment to security cooperation within its sovereign borders. This incident draws attention to a perceived growing Iranian covert footprint in Latin America, with Venezuela noted as a significant operational base for Tehran’s activities.
