A new dispute appears to be brewing in the region bordering India. Tensions have escalated between the Taliban in Afghanistan and neighboring Iran over water. Iran is currently grappling with a severe water crisis, with over 90% of its area on the verge of drying up and several rivers nearly depleted. The Taliban’s actions are exacerbating Tehran’s difficulties.
Notably, Tehran’s prominent newspaper, Jomhuri-e Eslami, recently accused the Taliban of deliberately blocking water flow towards Iran to exert pressure. The newspaper urged the government to move beyond mere silence and respond to the Taliban through political and economic means.
