External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar expressed disapproval of what he perceived as a “double standard,” indirectly targeting the United States regarding its stance on Russian oil purchases. He emphasized the critical connection between international peace and global development, highlighting their concurrent deterioration, particularly impacting nations in the Global South. During a G20 Foreign Ministers’ meeting under the South African presidency, Jaishankar stated that actions threatening development hinder peace efforts. He urged the international community to prioritize dialogue and diplomacy. These remarks followed economic measures imposed by the U.S., including tariffs and potential trade restrictions related to Russia’s ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Jaishankar underscored the adverse effects of higher costs for essential resources such as food, fuel, and fertilizers, especially affecting the Global South. He pointed out that certain nations could play a crucial role in facilitating peace by engaging both sides in conflicts.
