Jammu Kashmir Assembly Elections Phase 1 Voting: In the first phase of Jammu Kashmir Assembly elections, voting has started at 7 am today for 24 assembly seats in 7 districts. 23.27 lakh voters will cast their votes in the first phase. More than 35 thousand displaced Kashmiri Pandits living in different states are also casting their votes. 219 candidates are in the fray in the first phase. Among them, 9 are women and 92 are independent candidates. 110 candidates are crorepatis, while 36 have criminal cases registered against them.

This phase also includes Bijbehara seat, which has been the stronghold of Mufti family. PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti’s daughter Iltija is contesting election for the first time here. Mehbooba and her father Mufti Mohammad Sayeed have been CMs. Assembly elections are being held in Jammu and Kashmir after 10 years. In the 2014 elections, PDP had won the maximum number of 28 seats and BJP had won 25 seats. Both the parties had formed the government together.

Voting is going on in these 24 seats
Of the 24 assembly seats for which voting is being held, 16 are in Kashmir and 8 in Jammu division. This includes 4 districts of South Kashmir (Pulwama, Shopian, Anantnag and Kulgam) and 3 districts of Jammu division (Doda, Kishtwar and Ramban).

PDP had won 11 seats in South Kashmir and Chenab Valley
In the 2014 elections, PDP had won the most number of seats (11) out of 22 seats in South Kashmir and Chenab Valley. BJP and Congress had won 4 seats each, National Conference had won 2 seats and CPI-M had won 1 seat. After the abolition of Article 370 and delimitation, one seat each increased in Doda and Kishtwar districts and this time the number has become 24.
