Journalist Arrest Sparks Outcry as Turkey Expands Anti‑LGBT Measures

The arrest of Daily Birgun reporter Tuba Tekerek has ignited a fresh wave of criticism against Turkey’s expanding anti‑LGBT strategy. Tekerek was detained after publishing a report on the LGBT+ community, a piece she says was purely journalistic and not linked to any activist organisation.

Her detention came on the heels of a sweeping police operation that targeted LGBT+ NGOs and HIV‑awareness groups in Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Aydin and Mersin. More than one hundred people were taken into custody, including activists, journalists and demonstrators who gathered outside a court to protest the raids.

Authorities cited allegations of distributing pornographic material, facilitating prostitution and exposing minors to indecent content. Confiscated items included computers, smartphones, illegal drugs and a firearm. Justice Minister Akın Gürkök framed the action as essential for safeguarding families and upholding social morals.

International observers, including the European Council’s human‑rights commissioner, have expressed alarm, noting that references to "family values" cannot justify restrictions on fundamental freedoms. Human Rights Watch described the crackdown as the most extensive assault on LGBT+ rights in Turkey in recent years.

The Justice Ministry has now issued directives to prosecutors in all 81 provinces to pursue complaints about alleged pornographic or "gender‑neutral" material, and to secure digital evidence for possible online bans.
