Legal Safeguards Emphasised by Malaysian Prime Minister Over Zakir Naik Case

Speaking at the same summit, Anwar Ibrahim highlighted that the extradition of Zakir Naik will be governed strictly by Malaysia’s legal system. He said that while the Indian request is clear, the Malaysian authorities must ensure that due‑process rights are respected before any handover can occur.

The prime minister warned that rushed actions could undermine the rule of law and jeopardise the broader diplomatic rapport. He called for a meticulous review of the extradition treaty provisions, evidentiary standards, and human‑rights considerations.

Zakir Naik fled India in 2016 after the Enforcement Directorate opened probes into alleged money‑laundering and the spread of hate speech through his media outlets. Since acquiring permanent residency in Malaysia, he has remained a controversial figure. India’s formal request remains on the table, and Malaysia has signaled its intention to cooperate, provided that the legal safeguards are fully satisfied.
