National Program Aims to Boost Elder Support Services

Beijing, October 18 – A comprehensive national program targeting the welfare of older adults is gaining momentum as senior officials travel across provinces to evaluate local implementation. The initiative builds on a historic 1984 memorandum that urged younger cadres to safeguard the rights and well‑being of the elderly.

The program outlines clear objectives: expand the capacity of retirement homes, improve medical assistance for chronic illnesses, and foster community‑based support networks. During recent visits, the central committee chief met with residents in care centers, listened to their concerns, and instructed managers to prioritize compassionate service.

Statistics forecast that by the end of 2025, the elderly population aged 60 and above will total 32 million 33 lakh 80 thousand, accounting for 23 percent of the entire populace. The coordinated effort is expected to elevate the overall quality of elder‑care, reinforce traditional values of respect, and address emerging social issues linked to an aging society.
