White House Trade Advisor Peter Navarro has defended the US President’s decision to impose a 50% tariff on Indian imports. He made the contentious remark accusing Brahmins of India of ‘profiteering at the expense of the Indian people.’ Navarro characterized India as a ‘laundromat for the Kremlin’ in an interview with Fox News. He criticized New Delhi’s trade practices and geopolitical alliances, claiming they run counter to US interests, despite acknowledging Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. He stated that India’s high tariffs hurt American workers and taxpayers, as well as the Ukrainians. Furthermore, Navarro claimed that India’s engagement with Russia and China undermines its democratic status. His remarks followed Prime Minister Modi’s discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the SCO summit. The statement comes amidst global concerns over the US President’s tariffs, which a US Appeals Court has deemed illegal.
