The announcement of the 2025 Nobel Prizes will begin next week, recognizing achievements in medicine, physics, chemistry, literature, economics, and peace. The awards are among the world’s most prestigious honors. Amidst the anticipation, global political attention is once again focused on former U.S. President Donald Trump. The question on many minds is whether Trump will receive a Nobel Prize this year.
Trump has been nominated multiple times for the Nobel Peace Prize since 2018, by individuals both within the United States and from other countries. In December 2024, a Republican lawmaker proposed Trump’s name for the Abraham Accords mediation. This agreement normalized relations between Israel and several Arab nations.
**History of the Nobel Prizes**
The Nobel Prizes were established by Alfred Nobel, a 19th-century Swedish businessman and scientist. Nobel held over 300 patents, but his fame prior to the awards stemmed from his invention of dynamite, achieved by combining nitroglycerin with a stabilizing compound.
Dynamite became incredibly popular in construction, mining, and the arms industry, making Nobel exceedingly wealthy. In his final years, he decided to utilize his vast fortune to fund annual awards, specifically for ‘those who have conferred the greatest benefit to mankind.’ The first Nobel Prizes, in medicine, physics, chemistry, literature, and peace, were awarded in 1901, five years after Alfred Nobel’s death.
**Awarded to Those Who Benefit Humanity**
Individuals cannot nominate themselves for the prize, though they can be nominated by others, including members of each prize committee. While the committees operate slightly differently, they all strive to honor Nobel’s intention: that the winners have benefited humanity.
**Program Begins Monday**
The Nobel Prize program for this year begins on Monday. The medicine prize will be announced by a panel at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. The announcements will continue throughout the week, with physics on Tuesday, chemistry on Wednesday, and literature on Thursday. The Nobel Peace Prize will be announced on Friday, and the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences on October 13.
**Prize Includes $1.2 Million USD**
The prizes will be presented on December 10, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death. Each prize includes 11 million Swedish kronor (approximately $1.2 million USD), as well as an 18-carat gold medal and a diploma. Up to three winners can share the prize money for each award.
