North Korea Demands US Policy Shift Before Negotiations
North Korea maintains that discussions with the United States can contribute to long-term stability, but the regime insists such talks will never come at the expense of its core national priorities. Kim Yo-jong, representing the highest levels of North Korean leadership, issued this warning Wednesday, citing ongoing American hostility as a major diplomatic hurdle.
Kim Yo-jong indicated that recent American communications are compelling Pyongyang to question Washington’s genuine objectives. She firmly stated that while negotiation is a valid avenue for peace, it must never be equated with the preservation of state interests.
These remarks were issued against the backdrop of a Federal Bureau of Investigation report tying North Korea to a cryptocurrency fraud case involving billions of dollars from the Binance platform. North Korean representatives quickly condemned the report, labeling it a calculated provocation designed to manufacture international friction.
Describing the crypto allegations as indicative of a broader hostile campaign, Kim Yo-jong also referenced recent strategic dialogues among American, South Korean, and Japanese officials. Those talks reaffirmed a collective dedication to dismantling North Korea’s nuclear program, a stance Pyongyang views as aggressive and dismissive of its security needs. Joint military drills cited in those discussions were similarly condemned.
The North Korean official underscored that mutual dialogue is only possible if Washington fully transitions away from its current antagonistic framework. She made it explicit that without a reversal in American strategy, Pyongyang lacks any incentive to engage in bilateral talks. Consulting with adversaries who refuse to abandon hostile postures, she argued, yields no diplomatic value.
Kim Yo-jong further cautioned that North Korea will inevitably take retaliatory steps in response to what it perceives as sustained American hostility, without providing further specifics. The statement emerges alongside widespread speculation concerning a prospective meeting between Kim Jong Un and Donald Trump. To date, North Korean authorities have offered no confirmation or encouragement regarding such discussions.
