Norwegian Monarch Harald V Succumbs to Illness, Public Mourns Across Norway
On August 28, Norway’s King Harald V, aged 89, passed away after a serious bout of illness. Hospital officials confirmed that the monarch had been admitted to Oslo’s National Hospital since mid‑August, initially for hemolytic anemia and later for a bacterial bloodstream infection that aggravated his frail condition.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India posted a heartfelt condolence message on X, mentioning his fond recollection of a meeting with the king during a 2023 visit and praising Harald’s dedication to the Norwegian people.
Queen Sonja and Crown Prince Haakon, acting as regents, suspended their official duties and traveled to the palace to be with the grieving family.
Across Oslo and other cities, citizens gathered outside royal sites, laying flowers, lighting candles, and leaving handwritten tributes. The spontaneous vigils reflected the respect the nation holds for its longest‑serving monarch.
In response, Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre scrapped a scheduled trip to Germany, and parliamentary speaker Masud Gharahkhani aborted his foreign travel, both offering public sympathy.
Harald V, who reigned since 1991, had faced several medical challenges, including the insertion of a permanent pacemaker. He consistently reduced his public engagements but never considered stepping down, underscoring his lifelong pledge to the Norwegian parliament.
