A dangerous combination of resurgent militancy, cross-border tensions, and internal unrest has pushed Pakistan into an unprecedented security crisis. The country now leads the Global Terrorism Index, a grim distinction that reflects the scale of violence engulfing the nation in 2025. Statistics reveal the extent of the problem. During the first half of May, Pakistan experienced 57 terror-related incidents that claimed nearly 200 lives. The numbers underscore how quickly the security environment has deteriorated, with both the frequency and impact of attacks reaching alarming levels. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province bears the brunt of the TTP resurgence. The region recorded 545 violent incidents in 2025, resulting in 2,359 deaths. This marks a dramatic increase from 2024 when 487 incidents led to 1,363 fatalities. The 73 percent rise in deaths demonstrates how effectively militant groups have reorganized and expanded their operations. Balochistan has also seen a sharp escalation in violence. With 482 incidents and 1,534 deaths in 2025 compared to 250 incidents and 774 deaths the previous year, the province has experienced a 98 percent increase in fatalities. Baloch nationalist groups have intensified attacks on security forces, driven by grievances over disappearances and perceived injustices. The Afghanistan-Pakistan border remains a persistent source of conflict. Militant infiltration and attacks on border posts continue alongside occasional skirmishes between the two countries' armed forces over fencing and construction activities. These overlapping threats create a complex security challenge. Pakistan's ascent to the top of the Global Terrorism Index reflects a broader trend of increasing terrorism-related deaths that have now surpassed levels seen since 2013. The situation demands immediate attention from both domestic authorities and international partners to prevent further deterioration.
