Pakistan finds itself in an unprecedented period of political and military flux as the deadline for appointing its first Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) has passed without a formal announcement. The ongoing ambiguity surrounding the status of Field Marshal Asim Munir has ignited serious concerns among security analysts, with fears that his actions could destabilize the entire region. Experts warn that Munir, despite the uncertainty over his official position, might provoke an incident with India to solidify his influence. This risk is heightened by his documented history of strong anti-India rhetoric. The leadership vacuum, coupled with the potential for a provocative act, presents a dangerous scenario for Pakistan. Even within the military, there appears to be confusion about who holds the chief’s position, raising questions about accountability should an incident occur. This precarious situation is largely attributed to the weakness of Pakistan’s civilian government, which reportedly succumbed to military pressure to establish the CDF post. Had the government been stronger, it might have resisted granting Munir an extended term or the new CDF role. The recent creation of the CDF position, which consolidates command over the Army, Air Force, and Navy, was pushed through Parliament. Munir has already served three years as Army chief and, if his tenure is extended, could potentially hold powerful positions until 2035. While the Defence Minister has stated that the CDF notification will be issued in due course, the delay suggests a wait for the Prime Minister’s return. The constitutional amendment creating the CDF role, replacing the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, officially concluded on November 27. The dual-hatted position was expected to be formalized by November 29, the end of Munir’s initial three-year term as Army chief, but this did not occur. The current state of ambiguity places both military and civilian leadership in a precarious position, with potentially far-reaching regional implications.
