Prime Minister Narendra Modi graced the 60th Independence Day celebrations of the Maldives held at Republic Square in Malé, where he was the ‘Guest of Honour’. President Mohamed Muizzu also attended the event. Prior to the celebrations, PM Modi engaged with leaders from various Maldivian political parties, including Vice President Hussain Mohammed Latheef, Parliament Speaker Abdul Rahim Abdullah, and former President Mohammed Nasheed. On social media, Prime Minister Modi emphasized the strong partnership between India and the Maldives, built on mutual respect, shared values, and historical connections, highlighting the continuous growth of the relationship through people-to-people ties and cooperation in various sectors. He also reaffirmed India’s commitment to support the aspirations of the Maldivian people and to work collaboratively for global progress. Meetings also touched upon the formation of the India-Maldives Parliamentary Friendship Group in the 20th Majlis and reiterated the Maldives as a key component of India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy and its Mahasagar vision.
