Prime Minister Narendra Modi was bestowed with “The Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago,” the nation’s highest civilian award, on Friday. The award was presented by President Christine Kangaloo, making PM Modi the first foreign leader to receive this prestigious recognition. This event signifies a significant milestone in the diplomatic relationship between the two countries.
Upon receiving the honor, PM Modi expressed his gratitude, describing it as a source of “collective pride.” He highlighted the deep friendship and common cultural heritage shared by India and Trinidad and Tobago.
PM Modi stated, “This award reflects the eternal and deep friendship between our countries. I accept this honour as a collective pride on behalf of 140 crore people of India. To confer this award upon the first foreign leader reflects our deep relationship, which is based on common history and culture.”
PM Modi also emphasized the historical and cultural connections between India and Trinidad and Tobago, noting President Kangaloo’s ancestral roots in Tamil Nadu. He referenced the teachings of Saint Thiruvalluvar, who emphasized the key qualities necessary for strong nations. Modi also highlighted the cultural connections, stating “there is the thrill of cricket and the spice of pepper in our relations.”
President Kangaloo expressed her delight in conferring the award, acknowledging PM Modi’s contributions and the kindness shown to Trinidad and Tobago, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. She mentioned the 40,000 vaccine doses India provided, which further strengthened the relationship.
