Power Bills Fall Across Most Australian States

Canberra, May 26. Australian households are set to receive welcome news on their electricity costs. From July 1, the majority of homes and small businesses will pay less for power following the Australian Energy Regulator’s latest determination. The regulator’s final Default Market Offer shows residential tariffs in New South Wales declining by 3.4 to 5 percent. Queensland will see reductions close to 7.2 percent, while South Australia faces a small rise of 1.4 percent. Small businesses in all three states will benefit from lower prices. The Default Market Offer acts as a reference price for customers who have not switched to market contracts. It covers New South Wales, Queensland, and South Australia, while other regions maintain separate arrangements. Minister Chris Bowen linked the price drop to Australia’s rapid renewable energy growth. With the national grid expected to surpass 50 percent renewables by late 2025, wholesale costs are falling and delivering savings to consumers. AER Chair Clare Savage highlighted falling wholesale prices, lower volatility, and higher renewable output as key drivers. She noted that despite global tensions, electricity prices have stayed moderate. The regulator also launched the Solar Sharrer Offer, requiring retailers to offer smart-meter customers several hours of free daytime power. The initiative aims to maximize use of Australia’s growing solar capacity and reduce peak demand pressure.
