Russian President Vladimir Putin has directed officials to investigate the possibility of resuming nuclear weapons testing. During a security council meeting in Moscow, Putin tasked the defense and foreign ministries with gathering information and formulating proposals regarding potential tests. He asserted the advanced state of Russia’s nuclear deterrent, stating its modernity and strength are unparalleled globally. This directive follows remarks by former US President Donald Trump suggesting the US might restart its own nuclear testing program. Putin emphasized that Russia’s nuclear forces are at the highest level of readiness, comprising sophisticated land, sea, and air components.
Despite the President’s instructions, a Kremlin spokesperson clarified that no actual nuclear tests have been ordered. The focus, the spokesperson explained, is solely on assessing the advisability of preparing for such tests. This development occurs against a backdrop of heightened international scrutiny over nuclear capabilities. Trump’s earlier statements claimed other nations, including North Korea, Pakistan, China, and Russia, are secretly conducting underground tests, prompting his call for the US to match these activities. The international community notes that North Korea is the only nation to have conducted a nuclear test in the 21st century, with its last in 2017. While Russia has not conducted full-scale explosions, accusations persist from Washington regarding undeclared low-yield tests.
