Reports indicate that 990 Russian soldiers were killed in the Russia-Ukraine war in a single day. This development precedes a meeting between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin in Alaska, where discussions are expected to center on ending the conflict. It’s anticipated that Putin may announce a ceasefire during the meeting. Since the start of the war on February 24, 2022, Russia has sustained significant losses, with 1,067,100 casualties. Russia has lost a substantial amount of military equipment including 11,104 tanks, 23,130 armored fighting vehicles, 31,458 artillery systems, 1,466 multiple launch rocket systems, 1,207 air defense systems, 421 aircraft, 40 helicopters, 51,043 UAVs, 3,558 cruise missiles, and 28 ships.
President Zelensky stated that Russia is suffering three times more casualties than Ukraine.
On August 12, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Russia was losing approximately 1,000 soldiers daily, which is about three times more than Ukraine’s losses. Zelensky said that on August 11, Russia lost 531 soldiers killed, 428 wounded, and 9 captured. Ukraine, on the other hand, suffered losses of 340 soldiers, with 18 killed, 243 wounded, and 79 missing.
Trump and Putin are scheduled to meet in Alaska on August 15. Their last meeting was at the G-20 summit in Japan in 2019. The upcoming meeting in Anchorage, Alaska, will focus on ending the war in Ukraine. Trump has previously mediated three meetings between Russia and Ukraine, but these talks were unsuccessful.
In the ongoing conflict, Russia has experienced approximately twice the casualties of Ukraine. The war currently favors Russia. The Kremlin may use the Alaska summit to shift the focus away from peace talks with Ukraine and toward Russia-US relations, potentially aiming to persuade the Trump administration to offer economic deals with Moscow.
