Qatar calls for UN resolutions to curb Houthi threats to maritime security

Doha, September 8 – Qatar’s foreign ministry issued a formal appeal to the United Nations to enforce resolutions that would restrain Houthi activities threatening maritime security in the Red Sea. The ministry highlighted that recent strikes on Saudi cities and commercial vessels have caused civilian casualties and disrupted vital trade routes.

The communiqué noted that Houthi forces targeted civilian and economic sites in the Saudi provinces of Abha, Khamis Mushait, Jazan and Najran, resulting in injuries to women, children and other non‑combatants. Simultaneously, the group has launched attacks on merchant ships, putting the free movement of goods at risk.

Qatar stressed that such actions constitute a breach of Saudi sovereignty, a violation of international law, and a destabilising factor for the Gulf region. It urged the UN Security Council to implement Resolution 2216 on Yemen and Resolution 2722 on Red Sea navigation, reinforcing the legal framework that guarantees safe and unrestricted passage under UNCLOS.

The ministry concluded by reaffirming Qatar’s solidarity with Saudi Arabia, stating that the security of the Kingdom is integral to the collective safety of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) members.
