Rapid Debris Flow After Himalayan Glacier Calved Hits Cheilong Port

Beijing – The Xishuangbanna municipal news bureau reported that a sudden glacier break in the Himalayas on August 26 triggered a swift debris flow that ravaged Cheilong County. The fracture occurred at 10:52 a.m. at an altitude near 5,200 m in Nepal, according to remote‑sensing and on‑ground data reviewed by the disaster‑reduction team. The avalanche descended rapidly, covering nearly 22 km before arriving at Cheilong Port at about 1,800 m elevation. The impact wiped out roughly 0.7 sq km of terrain, including 27 buildings and their associated utilities.
