Relief Efforts Hampered by Data Gaps, Says US Representative on Nepal Disaster

Families of Nepal flood victims gathered in Northern Virginia, lighting candles and praying for answers. The event was attended by US Congressman Suhas Subramanyam, who pressed for clarity on the disaster’s true impact.

Subramanyam told IANS that officials still lack precise figures on casualties and missing persons, making it difficult to allocate rescue resources efficiently. "We cannot wait for miracles; families need clear information now," he said.

He cited two main obstacles: Nepal’s inconsistent record‑keeping and limited data sharing from Chinese officials involved in the region. Both factors, he argued, slow down aid delivery and rescue coordination.

The congressman emphasized that local leaders are urging the State Department and the Defense Department to provide cutting‑edge rescue equipment, which has finally arrived after an initial shortage.

He warned that recent reductions in USID funding for disaster forecasting and early‑warning initiatives could have long‑term consequences. "We cut funding for programs that help predict and mitigate natural hazards. That decision will cost lives in future emergencies," he warned, urging Congress to restore the budget.
