Remembering Yashwanth Ghadge: Courageous Indian NCO in Italy’s 1944 Battle

In a solemn ceremony held in Rome, officials commemorated the life of Yashwanth Ghadge, an Indian non‑commissioned officer whose gallantry earned him the Victoria Cross. At just 24, Ghadge stormed a machine‑gun nest in the Upper Tybri Valley, clearing the position with grenades, his Tommy gun, and finally a barrel‑grip finish when ammunition ran low. The citation emphasizes his “unwavering dedication to duty” even when survival odds were minuscule.

Although his remains were never recovered, his name is etched on the Cassino War Memorial in Italy, and a statue stands in his hometown of Managao, Raigad district, Maharashtra.
