Rescue Operations Intensify as Ship Loses Contact off Banjarmasin

The disappearance of the Vargo Transport-8 has triggered a heightened rescue effort off the coast of South Kalimantan. The ship, which embarked from Surabaya at 10:13 GMT on Saturday, ceased transmitting signals at about 02:00 WITA on Sunday, after battling adverse weather conditions.

According to the SAR Office in Banjarmasin, the loss of contact was first reported at 04:10 WITA by PT Vargo’s general manager, Yoi Rehi. Basarnas quickly mobilised a Class‑A SAR mission, deploying vessels, helicopters, and a dedicated coordination team to the vessel’s last known location, approximately 80 nautical miles from the Baserih SAR jetty.

Officials have stressed that the safety of the 243 passengers and crew is the mission’s utmost priority. Continuous coordination with other maritime agencies aims to accelerate the search and secure a safe outcome for all aboard.
