Rubio Clarifies No New Summit Talks as Putin Invited to G20

During a news conference at the United Nations, Secretary of State Marco Rubio reiterated that the United States has formally invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to the December G20 summit.

Rubio was clear that the invitation does not signal any ongoing negotiations for a new bilateral summit between President Donald Trump and President Putin. "There have been no discussions about organizing an additional summit," he said.

He added that if Putin accepts the invitation, the G20’s official program will provide opportunities for informal talks between the two leaders, as well as among other heads of state.

Rubio also mentioned that the administration remains open to dialogue with Moscow on ending hostilities in Ukraine. He pointed to recent talks on a limited cease‑fire focused on grain and energy channels, noting that while a full settlement is distant, such steps could lessen the humanitarian impact of the war.
