US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated on Friday that a meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping this year is highly probable. Speaking to reporters in Kuala Lumpur, Rubio emphasized that both sides have a strong desire for the meeting to occur. He met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Kuala Lumpur, marking their first in-person meeting amid ongoing trade tensions and geopolitical competition. Rubio described the hour-long meeting as ‘very constructive’ and ‘positive,’ noting the need to identify areas of cooperation and achieve strategic stability. The meeting occurred during regional meetings involving foreign ministers from ASEAN and partner nations. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent plans to meet with Chinese officials in the coming weeks to continue discussions.
