Following a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 8.8 that struck Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula, tsunami alerts have been issued across several regions. Initial waves, measuring 30 cm (12 inches), have already reached Hokkaido, northern Japan, prompting warnings of potentially larger waves to follow. Evacuations are underway in Kamchatka, the Kuril Islands, and parts of Japan. Tsunami sirens have been activated in Alaska, Hawaii, and New Zealand. A tsunami watch is also in effect for Guam and other Micronesian islands.
