In a recent cabinet reshuffle, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer appointed Shabana Mahmood as the Home Secretary. This historic appointment marks Mahmood as the first Muslim woman to hold the position. She succeeds Yvette Cooper, who has been assigned to the Foreign Office. Mahmood, a Labour Party MP representing the Birmingham Ladywood constituency, was born in Birmingham in 1980 and raised there with her twin brother. Her family hails from Mirpur, in Pakistan-administered Kashmir (PoK). She is now responsible for handling matters related to police, security, and immigration in the UK.
