Tetsuya Yamagami, the individual responsible for the assassination of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, has formally pleaded guilty to all charges. This admission comes after a judicial process spanning three years since the tragic event in July 2022. Appearing in court, Yamagami stated unequivocally, “Everything is true,” acknowledging his role in the fatal shooting. The incident occurred as Abe was delivering a campaign speech in Nara, western Japan. Yamagami was apprehended immediately at the scene, armed with a crudely fashioned homemade firearm. Following his arrest, he underwent an extensive mental health evaluation lasting approximately six months. This assessment ultimately determined his mental competency to stand trial, paving the way for today’s guilty plea. The conviction marks a significant milestone in the prolonged legal proceedings surrounding one of Japan’s most shocking political assassinations.
