South Africa Highlights Multilateralism and Diverse Strengths at 18th BRICS Summit

NEW DELHI, Sept 13 – President Cyril Ramaphosa used his closing remarks at the 18th BRICS summit to stress the importance of a truly multilateral world order. He reminded delegates that the bloc represents roughly 50 % of humanity and about 25 % of global GDP, yet none of its members attempts to impose its will on others.

"The beauty of BRICS lies in its diversity – different continents, cultures, languages and histories – and that diversity is our greatest power," Ramaphosa said. He called for a renewed commitment to shared sovereignty, mutual respect and inclusive development.

The president highlighted how BRICS serves as a platform for advancing South Africa’s priorities in trade, investment, science, technology, education and health. He reiterated that cooperation must move beyond commerce into areas such as AI, digital economies and joint scientific ventures.

He also applauded the summit’s elevated profile, noting that the participation of the UN, WTO and WHO amplified its relevance to global governance. Ramaphosa concluded by urging all nations to respect each other’s sovereignty and to work together toward peace, prosperity and sustainable development.
