State of Emergency Declared as Hurricane Lowell Threatens Hawaii

Governor Josh Green signed a statewide emergency declaration on September 3 to streamline response efforts for Hurricane Lowell, Tropical Storm Maria and any other tropical systems that may affect the archipelago.

The order enables state and local agencies to deploy staff, equipment and resources more rapidly if conditions deteriorate. Hawaii is still recovering from the damage caused by Hurricane Lola earlier this month, which left thousands without power and resulted in debris‑filled roads.

Lowell’s projected path suggests it could pass close to Niihau and Kauai, bringing hurricane‑strength winds, torrential rain and a heightened risk of flash flooding and landslides.

Coastal officials warn that the storm will generate high surf and strong rip currents, creating dangerous swimming conditions for residents and visitors alike.
