Strategic Defence Dialogue Expands Training Exchange Between India and South Africa

The Indian Army and its South African counterpart convened in New Delhi from 16‑18 September 2026 for the first ever Army‑to‑Army Staff Talk, a strategic platform designed to deepen defence cooperation. The agenda featured robust discussions on increasing bilateral training exchanges, joint capability‑building initiatives, and the co‑development of technology‑focused defence solutions. South African officers visited the Indian Army's artificial‑intelligence labs and the 505 Army Base workshop, gaining exposure to cutting‑edge indigenous projects. The talks were timed shortly after Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Cyril Ramaphosa met during the 18th BRICS summit, where they examined a wide‑ranging partnership that includes trade under the SACU framework, mining and critical minerals, infrastructure projects, food security, digital transformation, and skill‑building programmes. Both ministries hailed the AAST as a vital mechanism to cement military‑to‑military relations and promote a more equitable global order.
