Submarine and Shipbuilding Collaboration Explored During Diplomatic Tour

During his official visit to Mumbai, German Ambassador Dr. John Jasper Wieck toured the Mazgaon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL) complex, focusing on the company’s submarine construction capabilities. The delegation inspected dry‑dock facilities, production lines, and advanced marine engineering labs.

MDL’s senior management presented recent achievements, including the successful launch of a new class of coastal patrol vessels and progress on a joint submarine project with German firm TKMS. The ambassador praised the technical expertise of Indian engineers and expressed confidence in scaling up joint research and development.

In parallel, the German Schengen visa team engaged with Indian officials to streamline visa processing, aiming to increase the flow of business travelers and tourists between the two nations. Wieck noted that the current issuance of 200,000 German visas per year reflects a healthy bilateral relationship.

Both sides agreed to formalise a roadmap for future collaborations, targeting areas such as autonomous underwater vehicles, digital ship design, and sustainable shipbuilding practices.
