Sushila Karki officially began her duties as Nepal’s interim Prime Minister at Singha Durbar on Sunday, September 14. She arrived at her new office, the Home Ministry building designated as the PM’s office, at 11 am. Her assumption of this critical role comes amid political instability and opposition criticism. A meeting with the Chief Secretary and all ministry secretaries was convened in her presence to discuss the first cabinet expansion, with appointments expected to be announced that day. Following her assumption of office, Karki stated that those involved in acts of vandalism would be investigated and that her team’s focus was not on power, but on a six-month term, after which they would hand over responsibility to the new parliament. She also emphasized the need for public support. Karki announced that those who lost their lives on September 8 would be recognized as martyrs and provided with one million each, with the government covering the injured’s expenses and facilitating the transfer of bodies from Kathmandu. Karki’s appointment follows weeks of significant protests, primarily led by Gen Z, against allegations of corruption against the former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s Government. Sworn in on Saturday at Sheetal Niwas in Kathmandu, Karki is the first female to serve as Interim Prime Minister. Nepal’s Parliament was formally dissolved late Friday, September 12, 2025, and fresh elections are scheduled for March 5, 2026. Her selection came about through a public vote facilitated by Gen Z leaders on Discord, making her a key figure among the youth seeking stability in Nepal.
