New Delhi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday launched a scathing attack on the Congress, National Conference and PDP while addressing a rally in Doda, Jammu and Kashmir. He accused the ‘three political families’ of Jammu and Kashmir of ruining the state through dynastic politics. Modi said that this time the assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir are between the three families and the youth of Jammu and Kashmir.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “One family is of Congress, one family is of National Conference and one family is of PDP… What these three families have done to you people in Jammu and Kashmir is no less than a sin.” He said, “Till now ‘parivarvaad’ did not allow the youth to come forward and that is why after coming to power in 2014, I have tried to bring forward the new leadership of the youth in Jammu and Kashmir. Then in 2018, Panchayat elections were held here. In 2019, BDC elections were held and in 2020, DDC elections were held for the first time. Why were these elections held? So that democracy reaches the grassroots level in Jammu and Kashmir.”
PM Modi also alleged that ‘dynastic parties’ did not allow new leadership to grow and made the state “hollow from within”. He said, “After independence, Jammu and Kashmir became the target of foreign forces and dynastic politics hollowed out this beautiful region from within. Political dynasties promoted their children and did not allow new leadership to grow,”
PM Modi also took a dig at former Union Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde’s confession in which he said that he was afraid of terrorists while visiting Lal Chowk in Jammu and Kashmir during his tenure as Home Minister in the UPA-2 regime.
PM Modi said, “Do you remember the time when an unofficial curfew was imposed here as soon as the sun set?” He said, “The situation was such that even the Home Minister of the Congress-led Central Government was afraid of going to Lal Chowk.”
These are the first assembly elections to be held in Kashmir after the abrogation of Article 370. There are a total of 90 assembly constituencies in Jammu and Kashmir, out of which 7 seats are reserved for SC and 9 seats for ST. According to the Election Commission of India, there are 88.06 lakh voters in Jammu and Kashmir.
In the last assembly elections, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) had won 28 seats, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) 25, Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (NC) 15 and Congress 12 seats.
