Tokyo Marks Hiroshima Day, Pushes for Complete Nuclear Elimination

Tokyo commemorated Hiroshima Day on August 6, reminding the world of the unparalleled devastation caused by the atomic bomb dropped in 1945. In a ceremony attended by local officials and citizens, Mayor Kazumi Matsui issued a Peace Declaration that stressed the urgent need for total nuclear abolition.

He highlighted that any attempt to downplay the destructive power of nuclear weapons or to employ them for geopolitical advantage risks reigniting a cycle of retaliation that could once again affect innocent populations.

Matsui called on international leaders to move beyond symbolic gestures and adopt actionable steps, such as reinforcing existing non‑proliferation agreements, expanding diplomatic dialogues, and committing to verifiable reductions in nuclear stockpiles.

The observance began with a two‑minute moment of silence at 8:15 a.m., marking the precise moment the bomb exploded above Hiroshima, an event that claimed roughly 140,000 lives by the close of 1945.
