Tokyo to Revise Security Docs, Embrace Autonomous Systems

Tokyo is preparing a major overhaul of its national security framework to accommodate the rapid rise of AI and unmanned technologies. By the close of 2024, the government intends to amend three key defence documents, redefining the country’s strategic direction for the next decade.

Prime Minister Tajima highlighted that the speed of innovation in AI‑driven weapons is incomparable to traditional platforms, demanding an urgent policy response. The revisions will reflect the shifting regional dynamics, where neighboring nations are fast‑tracking autonomous drones and AI‑integrated combat systems.

The defence ministry also faces external pressure from allies, particularly the United States, to increase its defence budget. Japan’s 2022 pledge to reach 2 % of GDP in defence spending and to develop a counter‑strike capability underscores a broader transformation of its post‑World‑II defence posture.
