Former US President Donald Trump launched a scathing attack on Zohran Mamdani, the Indian-origin democratic socialist, following his victory in the New York City Democratic mayoral primary. Trump made disparaging remarks about Mamdani’s appearance, voice, and intelligence. He also criticized prominent Democrats, including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) and Chuck Schumer, for supporting Mamdani. Trump’s comments were made on Truth Social, where he labeled Mamdani a “100% Communist Lunatic” and expressed concern about the direction of the country. Mamdani, a New York State Assembly member, responded to his victory by quoting Nelson Mandela, stating that he was honored to be the Democratic nominee. Mamdani, born in Uganda to Indian-American filmmaker Mira Nair and Indo-Ugandan professor Mahmood Mamdani, is the first South Asian man to serve in the New York State Assembly and the first Ugandan, and the only third Muslim ever to be a member of the body.
