Former US President Donald Trump has asserted that the tariffs he imposed are essential for the nation’s survival, stating that “America would be completely destroyed” without them. This statement followed a recent federal appeals court decision that largely deemed these tariffs illegal. Trump’s remarks were made on Truth Social, where he further elaborated on his position. The appeals court’s ruling, which came down with a 7-4 vote, found that the president exceeded his authority under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). The focus now shifts to the US Supreme Court, which is expected to consider the case in late October. The Trump administration is anticipated to appeal the decision, with the Supreme Court deciding whether the invocation of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) for imposing tariffs is valid. The initial ruling, made by the US Court of International Trade on May 28, had already invalidated the tariffs. However, these tariffs, which affect imports from countries like India, will remain in place until October 14, allowing the Trump administration time to seek a Supreme Court review.
