Following a shooting incident near the White House involving an Afghan national and two National Guard personnel, President Donald Trump has announced a significant policy shift. Effective immediately, he plans to permanently pause all migration from countries he designates as ‘Third World.’ This drastic measure aims to allow the U.S. immigration system to ‘fully recover.’
The announcement carries profound global implications, impacting millions seeking opportunities, education, or refuge in the United States. President Trump stated on his Truth Social platform that despite technological advancements, the nation’s immigration policies have hindered progress and negatively affected the quality of life for many Americans.
His proposed policy includes terminating numerous Biden-era admissions, removing individuals deemed not to be a ‘net asset,’ and ending federal benefits for non-citizens. Furthermore, he intends to denaturalize migrants who disrupt domestic peace and deport any foreign national identified as a public charge, a security risk, or incompatible with ‘Western Civilization.’
Earlier, Trump condemned the shooting, labeling it a ‘heinous assault’ and an ‘act of terror.’ He identified the suspect as a foreigner from Afghanistan, brought to the U.S. during a 2021 airlift, describing Afghanistan as a ‘hellhole.’ The suspect is currently in custody. This policy change follows USCIS’s indefinite halt on all immigration processing for Afghan nationals.
