US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin convened in Alaska for high-stakes discussions, described as “very productive” and “mutually respectful.” The primary focus was on ending the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, considered one of the most devastating in Europe in recent history. President Trump stated that no agreement was reached during the meeting, emphasizing that a final resolution remained elusive. However, President Putin characterized the talks as “thorough and useful,” also expressing Russia’s interest in ending the conflict while highlighting concerns that must be addressed. The two leaders held a joint press conference after three hours of talks. The war in Ukraine, which began in February 2022, has resulted in thousands of casualties. President Trump indicated that while progress was made, a final deal was not yet finalized. Putin expressed the hope that the understanding reached during the summit would pave the way for peace in Ukraine.
