President Donald Trump of the United States will participate in the ASEAN summit to be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from October 26th to 28th. Despite opposition from political parties within the country, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has extended the invitation to Trump. Ibrahim defends the decision, stating that Malaysia intends to use the regional conference to express its concerns regarding the Palestinian people. Former Malaysian leader Mahathir Mohamad opposes Trump’s attendance, citing the US’s support for Israeli actions in Gaza. PM Ibrahim maintains that Malaysia will utilize diplomatic avenues while advocating for the rights of Palestinians. The summit is seen as an opportunity to engage with the US, a crucial trading partner for Malaysia, which aims to maintain its strategic autonomy and promote regional stability. A potential meeting between Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also possible during the summit.
