The United Kingdom is poised to formally recognize Palestine as a state. This decision is expected to be announced by Keir Starmer. In July, the UK government indicated that if Israeli actions in Gaza did not cease by September, leading to an end of the reported massacres, they would recognize Palestine. Keir Starmer had previously urged Benjamin Netanyahu’s government to take concrete steps to end the dire situation in Gaza, agree to a ceasefire, commit to lasting peace, allow the resumption of UN aid deliveries, and avoid annexation of the West Bank. However, the Israeli Foreign Ministry rejected his statement, and Netanyahu claimed Starmer was honoring Hamas and punishing hostages. Following through with this recognition would place the UK among 147 of the 193 United Nations member states that have recognized Palestine, ahead of the UN General Assembly in New York. This decision has been applauded by human rights organizations and Palestinian factions, while facing opposition from right-wing groups and the Israeli government. The UK government had warned Israel to cease hostilities and end the dire situation in Gaza by September. The ceasefire has not materialized, and conditions in Gaza have worsened. The UN has declared a famine in Gaza, while Israel expands its military operations. Israel has launched a major ground offensive to capture Gaza City and eliminate Hamas, drawing widespread condemnation. UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper described it as extremely reckless and horrific. Countries including France, Australia, and Canada are considering plans to recognize Palestine at the UN conference as a means of pressuring Israel. The Muslim Council of Britain welcomed the Prime Minister’s move, but urged that recognition must be accompanied by concrete action.
