UN backs Nepal's relief effort after sudden river flooding

The United Nations announced on 27 August that it is fully backing the Nepalese authorities' response to the sudden flash floods that devastated parts of Nepal and western Tibet. The floods, caused by a rapid increase in the Bhote‑Koshi River after an avalanche blocked its tributary Lhendé, have resulted in at least 157 fatalities and left hundreds unaccounted for, including 391 tourists and 44 security personnel.

UN Secretary‑General Antonio Guterres, via spokesperson Stephen Dujarric, conveyed his deep condolences to the families of the victims and expressed solidarity with the injured. He also highlighted the UN's readiness to assist with emergency supplies, technical expertise and coordination of international humanitarian actors.

In the affected districts, rescue teams are searching for missing persons, while UN agencies are delivering food, clean water and temporary shelters. The spokesperson praised the bravery of Nepalese emergency workers and confirmed that the UN will continue to monitor the situation and provide support as required.

The incident also caused extensive damage to infrastructure: nine hydropower projects, multiple commercial banks, at least 19 motor‑able bridges and a host of private and public properties were swept away. Moreover, 44 Nepal Army soldiers, 28 police officers and 13 members of the Armed Police Force remain missing. The UN’s pledge underscores its commitment to humanitarian assistance in the region.
