UN Climate Chief Commends China's Green Transition

Simon Stiell, the UN's top climate official, used a keynote speech at Tsinghua University to celebrate China's remarkable progress in reducing emissions. Stiell stressed that falling technology costs driven by Chinese manufacturing are helping poorer nations adopt cleaner solutions faster than expected. He also recognized the challenges ahead, noting China's continued dependence on coal, but said Beijing has already laid out credible plans to phase out fossil fuels. The official argued that China's example shows how climate policy can create new industries rather than simply restrict old ones. Stiell concluded that multilateral cooperation will succeed only if major emitters like China continue to lead by example, turning domestic targets into global momentum.
